Malik releases plan for improving safety in Akron
Shammas Malik’s campaign for Mayor of Akron has released its Safer Together plan.
The plan, which is a comprehensive approach to public safety, has five key components: building trust between the police and community and strengthening accountability for misconduct; ensuring the Akron Police Department has the staffing and resources it needs to be effective; investing in youth violence prevention to address the upstream causes of violence; committing fully to community policing; and testing innovative, collaborative emergency response programs.
Malik’s Safer Together plan is built on a fundamental principle that “every member of our community deserves safety – in our homes, neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces,” according to Malik.
Akron has seen significant violence over the past few years, and Malik points to public safety challenges as a key factor in Akron’s ongoing population decline and economic stagnation.
“Safety is the most basic building block of a community,” Malik said. “If we want to see Akron thrive, we have to make our city safer. And every member of our community can play a part in creating safety.”
Safer Together is one of four plans Malik’s campaign is releasing as part of his vision for Akron’s future. Later this month, the campaign will be sharing initial plans for the economy, health and housing, and education. The campaign also will be hosting community dialogue sessions, inviting community members to join in discussions about each of these issue areas before releasing final detailed plans in March.
